Szechenyi Bath is in the biggest green park of Budapest, in the beautiful City Park, close to a bunch of Budapest attractions. The  Neo-baroque palace was specifically built for hosting Szechenyi Baths as Hungary has been the country of baths (and Budapest the City of Baths) for many centuries.

The history of thermal bathing starts with the Roman settlers who built the first spa baths (Aquincum was the Roman’s settlement in today’s ‘old Buda’ district. Then, through the 16th century, Turkish occupiers built many of the famous and revived Turkish baths in Budapest. The 19-21st century even grew further in popularity, promoting natural medical trends where aqua therapies and their beneficial effects attracted hundreds of thousands to thermal spas all over Hungary. The beautiful building of Szechenyi Bath  is the design of Gyozo Czigler (Győző Czigler) who started to build Szechenyi Furdo in 1909. As an exciting contrast, these days the bath welcomes thousands of young people to a dazzling laser disco with throbbing vibrations to enjoy an ultimate bath party almost every Saturday night.

  1. Hi. Can children bathe? If so how much? How much for adults?
    Thank you.

    • Szechenyi Spa Baths

      Dear Clare,

      thank you for your comment.

Children & babies who are not dry and clean yet (being potty trained) are not allowed in the pools, not even with a swimming nappy. This usually applies to children under 3 years of age. Babies and toddlers can come with you to the bath, and stay outside the pool area.

As most of the outdoor and indoor pools and baths at Szechenyi Baths are more than 33 degrees Celsius, which means increased stress for the cardiovascular system of kids, whose body is not fully developed yet to be able to cope with the heat of the bath waters.

For kids under 14 the pools are not recommended.

There are no special prices for children or student in Szechenyi Baths, as the whole bath complex was, and is still aimed at adult bathers.

I hope I could be of help.

  2. My friends and I were very excited to visit the Széchenyi bathes, as we heard it was a must see. The bathes are great! Except for our Muslim friend… The friend with us was of the Muslim faith and as such must wear a full body swim suit as per her religion. They sold us the tickets just fine and we went in. But immediately we noticed three of the “lifeguards” were following us around. As soon as our Muslim friend tried to get into on of the thermal pools she was whistled out and told she either needed to change into something that did not cover so much or leave. Obviously, she couldn’t change because it would go against her faith so we al decided to leave. When attempting to get her a refund (not all of us, just her because why should she have to pay when she can’t go in the pools) we were told she couldn’t have a refund even though she wasn’t allowed in the pools at all. The woman at the ticket desk even started yelling at her because “she wasn’t the one to sell us the ticket so we needed to ask someone else” (although the man who sold us the tickets was gone). We talked to several managers and were basically told the same thing, one even said and I quote “you have to follow the ‘culture’ of the bathhouse like we follow the culture of your country.” They refused to understand it had nothing to do with her culture, but her religion. The only staff that were nice and understanding of the situation were the ones who didnt have power over the situation. The thing that bothered me the most was one piece suit were allowed, I was wearing one, it was simply an issue of length which really leaves a sour taste in my mouth because it really targets a very niche group of people…

      Dear Alexandra,

we are very sorry to hear about your complaint.
We have already replied to the email of your friend and asked for patience.

The email has already been forwarded to the management of the spa, as defining the dress code is not our decision. Please bear with us until we receive their reply regarding your case.

However, let me please point out the following on our website:

Please kindly note that swimming suits covering the full body (e.g. burkini) is unfortunately not accepted in Szechenyi Baths. Thank you for your understanding.

We will get back to your friend asap.
