Szechenyi Bath is in the biggest green park of Budapest, in the beautiful City Park, close to a bunch of Budapest attractions. The  Neo-baroque palace was specifically built for hosting Szechenyi Baths as Hungary has been the country of baths (and Budapest the City of Baths) for many centuries.

The history of thermal bathing starts with the Roman settlers who built the first spa baths (Aquincum was the Roman’s settlement in today’s ‘old Buda’ district. Then, through the 16th century, Turkish occupiers built many of the famous and revived Turkish baths in Budapest. The 19-21st century even grew further in popularity, promoting natural medical trends where aqua therapies and their beneficial effects attracted hundreds of thousands to thermal spas all over Hungary. The beautiful building of Szechenyi Bath  is the design of Gyozo Czigler (Győző Czigler) who started to build Szechenyi Furdo in 1909. As an exciting contrast, these days the bath welcomes thousands of young people to a dazzling laser disco with throbbing vibrations to enjoy an ultimate bath party almost every Saturday night.

Hello, we are three lady friends traveling and want to share a private spa room for the afternoon but only see the option for 2 with a couples massage. Do you have a private rooms that allow three ?

    • Dear Jackie,

Thank you for your question regarding the Private Spa arrangements. Unfortunately, the rooms are designed for two guests at a time, with all amenities provided in pairs, including towels, bathrobes, and beds.

For groups with an odd number of visitors, it is recommended to book an additional room to accommodate all three guests, as each private spa room has a maximum capacity of two.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

  2. I can’t see the option of purchasing children tickets – age 5 and age 9

    • Dear Ben,

Thank you for contacting us regard entry tickets to the Bath.

Unfortunately, there are no discounted tickets available, only full-priced adult tickets at the bathhouses.
(There is no different pricing for children or pensioners either).

Please note that children under 14 are not allowed to enter the thermal bath pool waters.
Please find more relevant information on the following page: https://szechenyibath.com/can-children-go-to-szechenyi-baths-szechenyi-bath-faq/

Thank you for your kind understanding.

  3. Terrible Experience – Avoid This Place!

I had an extremely disappointing experience at Szeczenuj baths in Budapest. First of all, the place was completely untidy, and it looked like nobody cared about cleanliness. It felt unhygienic and unwelcoming.

The staff was unbelievably rude and impolite. They acted as if they were doing us a favor by even acknowledging our presence. No greeting, no courtesy, just a bad attitude throughout. It’s shocking how little they care about customer service.

To make matters worse, you have to buy everything, meaning they won’t even provide basic things unless you pay extra. It felt like they were just trying to squeeze every last cent from customers rather than providing a good experience.

Overall, this was one of the worst experiences I’ve had in Budapest. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

    • Dear Daiva,

Thank you for sharing your experience at the baths. It is unfortunate to hear that your visit did not meet expectations.

Cleanliness and customer service are essential aspects of any thermal bath visit, and it is disappointing to learn that these did not meet your standards at Széchenyi Bath on the day of your visit. Budapest thermal baths have policies regarding additional services, and while some amenities may require an extra fee, it is understandable that this may not have aligned with your expectations. Since COVID, certain services deemed unsuitable for a post-pandemic communal bath environment have been withdrawn. Additionally, with soaring energy costs, maintaining baths with previous pricing and inclusions has become increasingly challenging. While it is regrettable that this affected your experience, it is hoped that some of the amenities provided—such as built-in hairdryers, electric locks for lockers and cabins—were useful.

Széchenyi Bath is a popular attraction with a high number of daily visitors, and continuous cleaning staff are present to maintain cleanliness across all areas. If any section requires extra attention, reporting it to the staff can be the most effective way to ensure immediate action, just as in any communal space.

For any formal complaint or further assistance, visitors can fill out the complaint book on-site or contact the official customer service team of Széchenyi Bath. If you have not already done so, your complaint has been forwarded to the official customer service team.

Thank you again for your valuable time and detailed feedback. All input, whether positive or critical, contributes to improving visitor experiences at Budapest’s thermal baths.

  4. Are swimcaps compulsory in any area of Szechenyi Baths please?
    Thank you and regards
    Barbara Jarvis

    • SzechenyiBath.com

      Dear Barbara,

      Thank you for your email.

Swimming cap is only required if you wish to swim in the cool-water sports pool designated for lap swimming.
For all other areas, including the thermal baths, plunge pools, and the outdoor central swimming pool, a swimming cap is not required.

Swimming caps can be purchased in the bath.

      Enjoy your stay in Budapest!

  5. Can you buy a towel at the baths?

    • SzechenyiBath.com

      Dear Fiona,

Towel rental is, unfortunately, no longer available at thermal baths in Budapest (since Covid restrictions).
The only exception to this, is the exclusive rooftop Palm House package where a towel and a bathrobe are part of the add on specialty entry.
Inside the baths at the pool areas ‘bath footwear’ is required (typically, waterproof slippers or flip flops): it is mandatory for health and safety reasons.
If you do not have flip flops or slippers, you can buy a pair at the entrance.

      Wishing you a pleasant stay!

  6. We are a family with 2 child (8&9 years old) and we are interested to visit thermal bath. Can you help us with more information?

    • SzechenyiBath.com

      Dear Lika,

      Thank you for contacting us.

Children under 14 are allowed in two pools with parental supervision, both outdoors without heating or heated access. Reaching the warm pool requires crossing 10–20 meters in swimwear. The middle pool, at 26°C, is less likely to appeal in winter, leaving the main thermal pool as the only option. This pool is the most popular and is likely to be very busy, especially on peak days.

Since indoor pools are unavailable for children under 14, Széchenyi Bath may not be ideal in winter. With only one usable outdoor pool, the cold could affect your family’s experience and impact your holiday. Nevertheless, it is your parental choice, which we will respect.

Alternatively, you can opt for Gellert Spa instead, where the big indoor pool can be used by the family, or even better, Aquaworld resort, which has many family friendly features.

      Enjoy your stay in Budapest!
